This sequence from episode 108 features one of my favorite lighting and color schemes we’ve ever accomplished in either Avatar or Korra. The dialogue exchange and fight scene are also among my favorites. As Mike says, “You like shows where stuff happens? Then Korra could be for you. Stuff happens.”
I have to admit I really liked Tarrlok’s character, even after he appeared to have lost any semblance of sensibility or reason and resorted to extreme actions, I was really hoping that there’ll be more to him.
The fight scene between him and Korra in episode 8 was incredible, I was completely blown away! But at the same time, couldn’t ignore a nagging sensation that my new favorite antagonist might not be around for much longer because of this. My suspicions were of course true, and what a shame! Everything up to that point was perfectly orchestrated, his character was building along the course of several episodes and becoming quite interesting… But alas, it wasn’t meant to be.
Episode 9 felt a little off to me, occurrence and even animation wise. Though I really enjoyed seeing Tarrlok being outbadassed by Amon, I felt like he deserved more, and that he was cast aside for the sake of faster plot progress or something along these lines.
Ah well, there’s hope yet I suppose, Zuko started out as an antagonist too, didn’t he? (even though we didn’t buy it for a second). Who knows what Amon is going to do to poor Tarrlok? (fangirl interpretations aside) I’m hoping this won’t be the last we see of Tarrlok’s cunning eyes and devious smile, and if he does reappear, it won’t be in order to play the role of the cliche villain of the day.
